Memory jogger re health insurance requirement for temporary employer-sponsored applicants
As of 14th of September 2009 the health cover requirement for 457 Visa Holders is as follows:
- Employers are no longer liable for health care costs for temporary overseas workers
- temporary overseas workers (457 visa holders) are obliged to maintain adequate health insurance arrangements for themselves and all dependants for the duration of their stay in Australia
- Condition 8501 – “to Maintain Adequate Health Insurance” wil be imposed and placed on the visa label
- Failure to have and maintain Health Insurance can result in a possible fine, visa cancellation and/or refusal to grant future extensions of the visa
- This will only apply to those with new 457 visas granted post 14 September 2009
- For those on current 457 visas, the health cover obligation remains with the Sponsoring company
- Random checks will be undertaken by DIAC to ensure that the prospective visa applicant obtains and maintains adequate health insurance for the duration of his or her stay in Australia
