Default Changing 417 to a tourist Visa

Hi all, I'm currently living in Melbourne on a working holiday visa with my partner. Our intention after we have worked the maximum amount we can is to then apply for a tourist visa and do a nice long road trip to see as much as we can of this country. I'm curious how that would work, I'm aware that we have to leave the country first so we were planning a small trip to New Zealand probably one week maybe a bit more and then to re-enter. I've seen a lot of mixed stuff online so far and I know this question has been asked here before but that was some time ago and as I'm sure everyone is aware these rules and laws change all the time. I'm also curious as to if we are allowed to stay any additional time after our visa runs out, probably a week or less, just to settle some things here, not to continue working. Any advice at all would be much appreciated, thanks a bunch, Quinn.

Generally you can't stay in Australia for more than 12 months on WHV/tourist visas. I don't like your chances of being granted a tourist visa after a week in NZ. You might be better off applying for the partner visa before your WHV expires.
