Good tips on how to find a job

THE Employment and Training Expo at the Rockdale Town Hall on Thursday, May 19 is a great community resource designed to help new migrants and jobseekers. Mahmudur Rahman is an example of how community networks can help new migrants find their feet.

A qualified information technology professional, Mr Rahman came from Bangladesh with high hopes for a job and a new life in Australia.
He had worked for a big telecommunication firm in Dhaka and hoped to land a similar job, but with no local knowledge, it wasn't easy.

His wife, who attended the adult migrant English program at St George and Sutherland Community College at Rockdale, heard about the college's skilled migrant mentoring program and suggested he give it a try.
This program matches employers with skilled migrants as an entry point for them into the workforce.

The result was that Mr Rahman was recommended to the St George Migrant Resource Centre as a work placement web developer, which evolved into a short-term contracted casual position.

While there, Mr Rahman was given support on employment search skills including tips on Australian cross-cultural communication. He is now fully employed in IT.

Mr Rahman would like to share what he has learned to help other migrant job seekers:
  • Volunteer for unpaid work placement and consider short-term contract jobs that may pay less, be further away or require a lower skill base.
  • Keep applying for jobs while learning about resume writing, interview skills and grooming.
  • Network for opportunities in your own community such as employment and training providers.
