ELEVEN Chinese nationals were detained by Immigration officials after raids in Adelaide's northeastern suburbs targeting illegal construction workers.

The Advertiser understands raids were made by Department of Immigration and Citizenship compliance officers and the 11 men were found in the same Valley View house.

The raids targeted illegal workers in the plastering industry and follow other recent investigations.

An Immigration spokesman said inquiries were continuing into those responsible for organising and employing the workers. Eight of those detained were said to be "unlawful citizens". The other three were suspected of breaching their visa conditions. All were placed in detention and face deportation.

Since last December, 20 Chinese nationals have been detained in Adelaide. All were working as plasterers.

A department spokesman said the raids should serve as a warning to individuals and those hiring illegal workers any breaches of immigration laws "will not be tolerated".

"It is the responsibility of employers to check with the department that all people they hire have the legal right to work in Australia," he said.

Employers hiring illegal workers face fines of up to $13,200 and two years' jail. Companies also face fines of up to $66,000 for each illegal worker if convicted. Those with information on illegal workers or those breaching visa requirements should call the Immigration Dob-In Line on 1800 009 623.
