134.6 Codes summary

Following is a summary of Student visa statistical codes.

The first three digits of the statistical code should reflect the visa subclass of the applicant's principal course. See section 38 Student visa subclasses.

Visa class indicator (first 3 digits)

570

ELICOS Sector

571

Schools Sector

572

Vocational Education and Training Sector

573

Higher Education Sector

574

Postgraduate Research Sector

575

Non-Award Sector

576

AusAID/Defence Sector.

Dependency indicator (4th digit)

P

Principal student visa holder (primary criteria)

S

Student visa dependant (secondary criteria).

The dependency indicator is automatically generated by IRIS/ICSE. IRIS codes a family unit member subsequent entrant as "P" not "S". Therefore officers should ensure that the appropriate Assessment Level and entry indicator (see 5th digit below) are entered for the client to reflect their status.

Assessment level and entry indicator (5th digit)

Assessment levels are determined according to the citizenship and education sector of the student. Members of the family unit are always assessed against the same Assessment Level as the student. Therefore, if the student and dependents are applying on the same application, they will receive the same entry indicator. However, if a dependent is applying separately to join a student who is already in Australia, they will receive subsequent entry indicator "2" or "3" depending on the Assessment Level of the student.

Subclass 570-576

2

Subsequent entry -AL 1 or 2

3

Subsequent entry - AL 3, 4 or 5

4

Assessment Level 1 - Low

5

Assessment Level 2 - Medium

6

Assessment Level 3 - High

7

Assessment Level 4 - Very high

8

Assessment Level 5 - Extreme.

“Subsequent entry” applies only to family unit members applying to join students already in Australia. Therefore, officers in Australia should not use the numbers 2 or 3 corresponding to subsequent entry in this field.

I have got a question from a student. How many weeks does she need to enrol to a full time English class to receive a student visa with work permit?
Years ago I think that was minimum 3 months, but today I could not find any infromation about it on the DIAC's website.
Anybody knows the answer? A link would be great too.

Thank you in advance,

If the applicant scores average 5 he/she will be eligible to enrol for a 10 or 20 weeks ELICOS course depending on the entry requirement of the Institute for the main course.

Thank you Glenn. She would like to enrol just to a General English course, but would like to work also. Anyway I do not understand the purpose to spend a fortune to come to Au and study just 4-6 weeks. Students are strange sometimes. ;o)

New question. One of my friend is finishing her 3 month VET course on 16th of October, but her visa is valid until 15th of March. Does it mean she can stay in Australia and work full time until her visa expires or she has to enrol into a new course within 28 days?

Hi Adam,

I do not specialise in student visas. In your friends case I understand the education provider will inform the DIAC within days of completeing the courseand unless your friend is enrolling in another course her student visa will nbe cancelled. Sometimetimes, the student visa is not cancelled immediately, as the student is given some ti,me to round up all the loose ends before departing. It all depends what is the long term intention of your friend.

Best call DIAC nearest to you and speak to a case officer. They are most helpful to studnets who are up front with their problem.

Hi,

I am writing to you as I am not entirely sure whether or not I did the right
thing when applying for an extension of my student visa.

First, I have just finished my course on december,
and my visa is expiring on march 15th, 2011.

My partner and I got married in July 2010
and she has still 1 more year to go before she finishes her bachelor degree (none of us is australian), so
her visa expries on march 2012. I am bit concerned because:
a few weeks ago, we went to DIAC and explained the situation to them. At the end
of it, they gave me the form 157A, but just today, I am wondering if they
shouldn`t have given to my partner the form 919 for her to nominate me (I don`t
know if this is necessary because we met here in australia and she did obviously
did not nominate me in her original visa application).

I have sent to DIAC my application a few days ago inclusing my bank statements,
the bank statements of my parents as they are sponsoring me during my studies
here, ID photos, OSHC insurance and a guarantor letter signed by my father and
that was it. I was wondering by the way if the HSA appointment was needed or
should DIAC advise me to take it?
Would you also advise me to tell y father to forward by mail or fax his bank statement?

Thanks in advance for any advices,

Thanks again for your attention,
KInd regards,
Taoro
